On-premise means: the machine on which your AI agents work stands in your own building. It is connected to your company network. Your staff reach it there, and your agents’ tasks are processed on the machine that stands in your premises. Cloud means: the same agents on servers of a data centre with us.

What on-premise means at SMarTrAgents

You receive a fully set-up machine instead of software to install yourself. It comes from our hardware partner, is set up with Ubuntu Server and is installed at your site. After that it runs in autostart mode. That means it starts with the power switch and does not wait for anyone to open a program at a screen.

On this machine sit your agents and your tasks. SMarTrAgents provides nine agents, each with a fixed field: SMarTrCeo for strategy, SMarTrITGott for IT operations, SMarTrMarketing, SMarTrContent, SMarTrHRGott for people, SMarTrSocialMedia, SMarTrInfluencer, SMarTrTrader for numbers and SMarTrPenTester for security.

For models you operate yourself a clear rule from our contract documents applies: inputs and outputs do not leave your infrastructure. Your tasks are created on your machine, in your network.

The decision: cloud, on-premise or hybrid

Which hardware do I need, who provides it, and what does it cost?

We answer these questions in order.

On the hardware: you need a machine that runs in autostart mode and stays reachable around the clock. A switched-off computer under the desk is not a server, because your agents work even when you are not in the building. The machine needs a fixed place in your network and a power supply that keeps running overnight.

Who provides it: our hardware partner delivers the machine, fully set up as an Ubuntu Server, and we install it into your network. Instructions and self-assembly are not needed.

What it costs: the offer is calculated by the hardware partner against your workload, so you receive one figure for your business instead of a line from a price list. You request it in the conversation and receive a figure that fits your business. The cloud plans alongside you book in the shop.

How the installation runs: Ubuntu Server in autostart

The installation is part of the commitment we have given outwardly: we, with our hardware partner, install an Ubuntu Server in autostart mode into the customer’s network. Translated to your business that is four steps.

First: we talk about your tasks and about the network in which the machine is to stand. One person who lets us into the network is enough for that.

Second: the hardware partner supplies the machine, with Ubuntu Server as the operating system. Ubuntu Server means the machine works without a screen and without a mouse. It sits on the shelf, restarts when the power was briefly gone and comes back up on its own.

Third: we install the machine into your network and set up your agents and tasks on it. After that you reach the machine through your network, like any other computer in the business.

Fourth: you check on your real tasks whether they run as intended.

What happens when the server in the building fails?

Every machine fails at some point, and every line breaks at some point. A business that keeps quiet about that tells too much of a story. So here is what happens in the two cases.

Case one, the internet line is gone: your tasks in the building keep running. Tasks that are processed entirely with you need no internet connection. The exchange with the cloud, that is the tasks you deliberately placed outside, waits until the line is back.

Case two, the machine in the building fails: on request there is a fallback route into the cloud. Your agents then keep running on our servers, in a data centre in the European Union certified to ISO/IEC 27001, currently in Helsinki, operated by Hetzner Online GmbH. The same availability target applies as for our other plans: 98.5 percent as an annual average, as a target and not as a promise. The fallback route is discussed with you during the installation; it is your decision. If nothing at all is to run outside during a failure in the building, you say so, and then it stands that way.

Can I decide per task whether it runs in the building or in the cloud?

Yes. You set for every task where it is processed. The cost estimate for your next quote can run in the building while the social media plan of one of your agents goes to our cloud servers. Four things help with it.

First the data location: check per task which documents go into it. Whoever processes cases that must stay in the building places those cases in the building.

Second reachability: tasks that must keep running during a broken line belong on the machine in the building.

Third the volume: heavy tasks involving text and images need more computing power than a small machine offers. Those tasks go to the cloud, where the plans from €25.99 a month deliver what the agents need.

Fourth the agreement: a mixed operation needs, once, the assignment of which task belongs where. You write that assignment down for yourself, after that it runs on its own.

AI agents on-premise for the mid-sized business

The mid-sized business stands in a situation of its own with this question. Large corporations build their own AI environment. Trades businesses and one-person companies usually go with the cloud, because the entry there lies at €25.99 a month and nobody has to operate a server. The mid-sized business sits in between: too large for the answer that the data lies somewhere anyway, too small for an IT department of its own that operates a machine day and night.

It is exactly for this situation that this operating mode is built. You receive a finished machine in the network instead of a box with a manual. You receive an agreement on the fallback route instead of troubleshooting through a search engine. And you receive a contact who has the same name at the next question as at the first conversation.

The price follows this situation too. You receive an offer calculated for your workload, and if the answer is that the cloud is enough for you, that stands in the offer just the same.

What you bring

First: a place for the machine. A lockable room or shelf space where the power keeps coming and where nobody works on the cables without agreement. The machine has no screen, but it needs air to breathe.

Second: a person who lets us into the network, for the installation and for later adjustments. That can be you, or a colleague who administers the router. Basic knowledge of the router is enough.

Third: a decision about the fallback route. If the machine fails, should your agents keep running in the cloud, or should everything wait until the machine runs again? Both are legitimate. Both should, however, stay a decision and not become an accident in case of a fault.

Dedicated server in Helsinki: your own machine in the data centre

Between the cloud and the machine in the building lies a third route: a dedicated server in the data centre in Helsinki certified to ISO/IEC 27001 that runs only for your business. You receive your own IP address, the same nine agents as in the cloud, the data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR and an operation without your own hardware in the building. This route fits businesses that need a separate machine and prefer to have the server room in a data centre.

Two routes, one interface. For many tasks a model that runs on a normal working machine is enough: summarising texts, sorting notes, answering questions about files.
